Chilsun You
"To be different and to create something remarkable, the artist must first learn to understand and appreciate the environment."
Born in South Korea, Sun You's prodigious talent in painting was evident since childhood. At the young age of 18, Sun You held her first solo exhibition at the then Daegu's Provisional Gallery and moved to New York to pursue her education at Parsons School of Design. She was first female Korean student from Daegu region to go to New York and join Parsons in the 1980s.
During her time in Parsons, she was actively involved with artist movement in Daegu, serving as an adviser for Seoul Academy International School.
Since 1991, Sun You decided to enlightened students with her artwork as a teacher until 2001.
Now, she is serving as a member of OKAA (Orange County Korean Artist Association) where she continues to create artwork based on floral inspiration.
She adopted new form of arts using sea shells and Korean rice paper (hanji) based on the experiences she had with materials in the past. The artwork focuses on expressing blooming flowers.
She utilizes different techniques in terms of expressing brilliance and true beauty of flowers, and effectively capturing positive and negative meaning of the flowers.
Most often, she expresses natural energy in her artwork via natural sources such as sea shells, rice paper and special type of hanji made from Mulberry tree fiber. The sea shells are carefully selected from the finest abalone and cone shells.
She emphasizes usage of sea shells and hanji to capture the beauty and essence of blooming flowers.
